Survey of Mathematics with Applications- A 7th Edition

4 stars (EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR BEGINNING & ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES) - I have been teaching out of Angel & Porter for the last three years. It has quite a few good examples, though I agree with the first reviewer's comment that it does need more challenging problems. Among the topics I have covered are: inductive reasoning, set concepts, symbolic logic, truth tables, algebra, applied geometry, probability, statistics, and mathematics of finance. Though the examples are laid out fairly well for those who are mathematically inclined, the teacher who happens to have quite a few students with weak mathematical skills is often finding himself or herself in situations of having to create ways to become an effective expositor of mathematical theorems and applications. In other words, by trying to explain what the authors are providing in their examples, the instructor is frequently shouldering the added burden of making this book come to life not only from a mathematical perspective but also from a communicative standpoint. On a positive note, however, there are several excellent applications, and the range of topics is quite broad. Oftentimes there is a gap between the level of advanced high school mathematics and that of a four-year university that is so serious that even a student who performed A's in high school will struggle in the type of college math course he or she is placed in. Fortunately, Angel and Porter have been able to fill in quite a few of the missing pieces. 1 stars (Still incompetent after all these editions) - A few years ago I wrote a review here on Amazon, of an edition of this text from around 1994. 1 stars (Hmmm.) - I honestly do not know how to rate this, because I still have not received this book. I already had my first test. So, I had to go buy this textbook from the bookstore on campus and was charged an outrageous amount. Also, I emailed the seller to see what the tracking number was and still haven't had response. 5 stars (Essentials of Geology) - The book has a wealth of information, I have enjoyed reading it, and using it in my class. 4 stars (A good textbook for the the physical geology student) - This book is intended as a text for the collegiate course in physical geology. The course encompasses a general overview of the physical processes by which the Earth continues to develop, both gradually and by sudden events of great magnitude. Plate tectonics, volcanism, erosion, mountain building and shaping, mineralogy, mass wasting, the impact of man, glaciation, and all other manner of things are clearly discussed in nineteen separate chapters. The color photography and diagrams are remarkably good, and closely follow the text, which is a real boon, especially to a student who is hard-pressed for time. The coverage is up-to-date and accurate in all respects. Many of the photographs, such as the those of the eruptions at Montserrat, are very current. Given the fact that physical geology is the first of six courses required for any geology degree, and that any well-informed person should have no trouble understanding the contents of this book, I would recommend it to any reader interested in earth science, student or not. ...

Earth Science 11th Edition

4 stars (Awesome, not quite college level) - I'm using this book for a high school freshman year Earth Sci class, and I love it. It's very readable and clear, with appropriate diagrams that help understanding. It also avoids doing what lots of high school textbooks do, which is showing lots of weird-looking kids in plain T-shirts doing experiments in a doomed attempt to appeal to students. I've learned a lot with this book :) 5 stars (A great book covering everything) - This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also. It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out. I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful. I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book. ...

5 stars ( FileMaker Pro 7 Bible (Bible (Wiley))) - I have used this book to learn enough for advanced programmong of a complex Filemaker database. Reading it from front to back and highlighting what I need to know/do is extremeley easy, enjoyable and clear. I love this book. Simple, well-written and complete. 4 stars (An excellent revision to the series) - The FileMaker Pro Bible series has been consistently good, much better than many others in the line, such as cloying, annoying PhotoShop Bible. Schwartz and Cohen do an excellent job of compiling material on using FileMaker Pro 7. Yes, you could find it all in the FileMaker Pro Help file on the FileMaker site or in a various news groups, not as mere regurgitation, but as a well organized compendium But they save the reader the effort and frequent trouble of doing so. The material is well-organized, coherent and free of the forced amateurish attempts at humor that mar so many technical books today. In short, if you use FileMaker Pro 7, you need this book. I've been using FileMaker since its release . . . and the progressive volumes of this series have always been at hand.
